The Semana de Cine Español (Spanish Cinema Week), organized by Wiesner Distribution, is an annual event that curates and presents seven of the latest and most acclaimed Spanish films to audiences in Puerto Rico and, more recently, Costa Rica. This initiative aims to showcase the richness of contemporary Spanish cinema, often featuring works that have garnered significant recognition at international film festivals.
In addition to film screenings, the event has a tradition of inviting renowned Spanish actors and directors to engage with the audience. For instance, in the inaugural edition, Paco León attended to present his film Embarazados. Similarly, in the fifth edition, held in March 2023, Eduardo Casanova was the guest of honor, presenting his film La Pietá.
The festival's expansion to Costa Rica in April 2024, hosted at Cine Magaly in San José, underscores its commitment to promoting Spanish cinema across Latin America. This extension allows a broader audience to experience the diversity and excellence of Spanish filmmaking.
By combining film screenings with the presence of distinguished industry figures, the Semana de Cine Español offers a comprehensive cultural experience that fosters a deeper appreciation for Spanish cinema among audiences in Puerto Rico, Costa Rica, and potentially other regions in the future.
